That old cover story
At one point of our conversation, Brian asked me something like: „Do you know where „Drawn From Life“ really came from?“ I raised my eyebrows, and then he told it to me.

In other words: The entire interview from the old issue of Jazztethik from May 2001 can now be read as a “scrapbook story”— just click on that one word in bold letters in the German text! It may not win any awards for aesthetic appeal, but it does offer an interesting insight into the 2001 album “Drawn From Life” by Brian Eno and Peter J Schwalm, which will be re-released on October 16 in all formats—LP, CD, and digital download!

The “Drawn From Life” LP by Brian Eno and J. Peter Schwalm is being reissued on Opal, bringing the collaborative album first released in 2001 back into circulation. The work credits both artists jointly for the first time and features contributions from Holger Czukay, Laurie Anderson, Nell Catchpole, and Leo Abrahams; the album originally came out in 2001 and was then accompanied by performances and a short tour that included Porto, Lanzarote, and a headlining appearance at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival. Rights issues meant the album was unavailable for an extended period until the rights reverted to Opal.
Musically, “Drawn From Life” combines structured electronic arrangements with organic elements and atmospheric guest contributions, with the production work by Brian Eno and J. Peter Schwalm giving the tracks room for subtly melodic and richly textured soundscapes. The 2026 reissue appears via Opal across all formats and includes, as an extra, the bonus track “Bloom (Instrumental),” which adds an extended instrumental version to the album. For listeners interested in downbeat, electronica, and leftfield approaches, the “Drawn From Life” LP offers renewed access to this multifaceted collaborative project.
