The thing with Andy Beta, and other „August Revelations“

So often I stumbled on writings by Andy Beta, in recent months. I read Richard Williams‘ text on Andy‘s Alice Coltrane biography, I read about his favourite Marion Brown album (I kindly prefer three other ones), I read about his weak spot for Frederikbergs Records (some stories to tell here, both of us), and shared his enthusiasm about an old free jazz album by Charles Tyler, one of Albert Ayler‘s close companions. Finally I saw and immediately Diven into his very, very long and in-depth interview with Steve Tibbetts. Which is now one of our monthly revelations of August – in the TALK column.

Within the department of film and television, i followed my own weak spots for brilliant detectives. In this case you can see that old Buster Keaton movie „Sherlock Jr.“, a bit more than 100 years old, and a short appraisal of the second season of the „John Sugar“ series with Colin Farrell followng the cinematic trail of all those infamous detectives from the film noir era.

Another time travel experience of the darker kind: Reetze reviews a historic novel by Anja Kampmann, „Die Wut ist ein heller Stern“. In our „ARCHIVE“ column, I remember and listen to two ECM classics that had both been recorded at the end of 1977 – classics that deserve the label classics – Bill Connors‘ „Of Mist And Melting“, and Jan Garbarek‘s „Places“ (always one of my ten favorite Jan Garbarek albums).

And our albums of August? If Jan Bang finds a blue hour, he will soon write his notes on Nils Petter Molvaer‘s „Be Quiet“ and I will add my take on Daniel Lanois‘ „Belladonna Nocturne“, a „no-ambient-ambient album“, „country-existential“, so to speak. I am also fond of the forthcoming Shearwater work „The New World“ with its subtle Talk Talk vibes.
