That was the title of an old Ralph Towner portrait of mine, now found with the help of Thomas Loewner in the deep archives of the radio station. It was exactly 30 years ago when the show was recorded and broadcasted. February 1996, few weeks after the release of his collaborative work „Lost and Found“. I‘ve heard this thing for the first time now since then. No surprise, that „blue hour“ included some of my favourites like „Solstice“, „Diary“, or „Solo Concert“. A la recherche du temps perdu: while listening, I remembered the relaxed atmosphere of the interview in Dortmund, where he played a solo concert in the old „Domicil“. Ralph took his time to unfold thoughts and memories: the early years with Oregon, his first encounter with the 12-string, a detailed look at his way of composing and improvising solo. What you won‘t hear, is his deep and telling sigh when I mentioned „Solstice“. I will post the portrait here within the next seven days. He spoke about another pure guitar solo album to be recorded soon. „Ana“, produced by Manfred Eicher in Oslo, was released in 1997 – and what a beautiful album that one is! Ask Mr. Whistler!
