Jack

A perfect pair, their African „names“ like the title: „Ruta and Daitya“. This was one of my first ECM records, maybe my ver first, and for many it may seem a curiosity, being the only one in Jarrett‘s long story with the German label, where he is touching electric keyboards. It was recorded at the end of Jack’s and Keith’s period with Miles. The album has the looseness of an „after hours“-session with African moods and a quite exotic flair, a million miles away from American songbooks. By, the way, my first album with Jack was Charles Lloyd‘s „Sombrero Sam“, my second Miles „Live at the Filmore“, and then can this!

Jack DeJohnette‘s melodic feel on drums and percussion makes up for a perfect couple of like-minded spirits. For reasons I cannot explain really, I will love this album forever. It is uncomparable with any other album they did together. There are records you have had a story with, you offer them a good place in the back of your mind without ever revisiting them. This is one of those I return to since my teenager days. Though it got a new cover design at some point in time, I was always happy with the surreal naivety of the original cover. Let‘s speak about music sending you places … because there were so many more with Jack‘s handwriting.

Wie oft habe ich Jack gehört – bei ECM war er lange Zeit neben Jon Christensen eine Art „Hausdrummer“ (Paul Motion der Dritte im Bunde), und die Viefalt seiner Arbeiten als Leader und Sideman spricht Bände für seine Horitonte, die sich niemals auf Schulen, Moden und Stile festschreiben liessen. Meine Zeit mit ihm – als Hörer – war und ist dermassen erfüllt und stetig, dass nun jeder Blick zurück eine Portion Wehmut erhält. Zeit, auch mal wieder Jack DeJohnette‘s „Oneness“ aus dem Jahre 1997 zu hören: damals begegnete ich ihm in einem Bonner Hotel, und es ging allein um einen kleinen Beitrag für die JazzFacts zu diesem feinen Album. Unvergessen seine strahlende Freundlichkeit.

Neben den genannten Platten fallen mir als erstes folgende Werke mit Jack als Sideman oder Leader ein, die einen besonderen Wert in meiner „Hörgeschichte“ haben – nur eine gute Handvoll, schliesslich geht es hier um life‘s company!
