Listening (Wadada) Leo Smith for the first time ever on a fantastic Impulse album from the first half of the 70’s, Marion Brown’s Geechee Recollections. Fabulous, the album.
The picture was shot by me during a concert of the CHIMAERA ensemble of pianist Sylvie Courvoisier at Amsterdam BIMhuis July 13 (2024). The CHIMAERA ensemble comprised Courvoisier’s trio with Drew Gress and Kenny Wollesen augmented by the trumpeter’s Nate Wooley and Wadada Leo Smith, guitarist Christian Fennesz and drummer Nasheet Waits. A truly dream line-up. The most thrilling moment of the concert for me came when Fennesz and Wadada caught fire in their tight and beautiful interplay. Precious! And both afterwards confirmed their intense joy in that interaction.
They say every picture tells a story,
but sometimes is so good to get a story told.
There is this double cd on Intakt with the same name
I learned to love after richard williams’s review,
Another great blue moment on an album full of
Blue / shining moments.
Another dream line up from 1973, and Geechee Recollections
Marion Brown — alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, clarinet, percussion
Leo Smith — brass, strings, percussion
William Malone — thumb piano, autoharp
James Jefferson — double bass, cello, percussion
Steve McCall — drums, percussion
A. Kobena Adzenyah — drums, African percussion
Jumma Santos — congas, miscellaneous instruments
Bill Hasson — percussion, narration
Impulse/Universal issued „Geechee Recollections“ together with „Sweet Earth Flying“ on CD some years ago. Two other Impulse albums featuring Marion Brown got issued that way also – „Three for Shepp“ and „Vista“ (CD’s are old hats, someone told me – I like old hats, probably because I’m becoming an old fart).
radiohoerer sent me here. Thanks Mr. Engelbrecht. Loved your radio programs way back in the 90’s, when I was still listening to radio.
