Chiaroscuro (revisited)
„Chiaroscuro entstand während einer Reise durch Norwegen. In einigen Clubs waren vielleicht zwanzig, manchmal fünfzig Zuhörer dabei. Ich erinnere mich, das erste Stück, „Opening Image“, wurde auf einer Mini-Disc aufgenommen. Es wurde so leise aufgenommen, das du das Rauschen hören konntest. Das Rauschen war übermächtig, wir mussten was damit machen. Und Erik Honore, nun, er ist der perfekte Produzent, ein Meister der Töne, er findet stets auf kreative Art Lösungen für ein Klangproblem. Er schlug vor, den Synthesizer einzusetzen, um noch mehr Rauschen zu erzeugen, das neue Rauschen zum alten hinzuzufügen, und mit dieser Dynamik des Rauschens zu arbeiten, so dass das Rauschen selbst eine Art Instrument wird.“ (Jan Bang)
This year‘s Punktfestival will see the original line-up of „Chiaroscuro“ on center stage celebrating Arve Henriksen’s groundbreaking album, where the acclaimed trumpeter is joined by Jan Bang and Audun Kleive. Let‘s call it back-to-the-roots magic! In regards to Jan‘s memories of that old concert tour, one question arises: with that lack of tape hiss during that forthcoming concert, will there be samples of the old noises, and a synthesizer in action for covering them up? No kidding, the original remix of the recorded sound definitely had an impact on the final magic. (m.e.)

Arve Henriksen: „Chiaroscuro“
In der südnorwegischen Küstenstadt Kristiansand feierte im Juni 2005 ein Festival sein Debüt, das die Welten der improvisierten und der elektronischen Musik miteinander verwob. Nach den jeweiligen Auftritten im Agden Theater fand im so genannten Alpha-Room eine Remix-Session statt, bei der Passagen des vorausgegangenen Konzerts als Ausgangmaterial für weitere Bearbeitungen benutzt wurden. Zu den agilsten Musikern des Festivals zählte der Trompeter Arve Henriksen.
Er spielte an den drei Tagen des „Punktfestivals“ u.a in der Gruppe des Oud-Spielers Dhafer Youssef mit, im norwegischen Quartett Supersilent und seinem eigenen Ensemble Chiaroscuro. Die gleichnamige CD dieses Trios war bereits von der internationalen Musikkritik für ihre Melange aus melodischen Improvisationen und abenteuerlichen Klangflächen gefeiert worden. „Mit Norwegen assoziieren manche Leute eher kühle, abstrakte Klanglandschaften“, sagt Festivalleiter Jan Bang, „dagegen strahlt Chiaroscuro eine ungeheure Wärme aus, ein beinah südamerikanisches Flair!“.

Dear Michael,
Perhaps I can dig out the old mastertapes and capture some of the noises to use in the Chiaroscuro concert. Certainly there will be room for doing things differently. I´m curious to see how this special one off concert will sound. Some of the magic lies in the instrumentation: trumpet, log drums, a bass drum and sampling. Some years prior to that, Erik, Arve and myself made Birth Wish, an album with only piano and trumpet as sound sources. Christian Wallumrød played the piano in the old Fagerborg studio in Oslo and if i remember correctly, was recorded onto 24track 2″ analouge tape.

I am very curious about that concert… the mixture of the old and dreams, soundwise…. and I remember you once talking about the warmth, the nearly south american vibes of the album that never fails to draw us listeners inside. David Sylvian was / is another devoted listener……
So I will write an extended review about the new meeting of kindred spirits😉
Birth Wish seems to be a buried treasure, never heard it, Jan…
… and in my Jazz Facts magazine at Deutschlandfunk (in July) I would like to present that forthcoming Sidsel Endresen album, with its sequence of PUNKT appearances from the days of old, if i’m right…. (m.e.)

The PUNKT line-up does indeed look super exciting, with Alva Noto, Eyolf, „Khmer“ etc.. and I really want to visit again. That said, the cost of three single concert days at 90 euros each plus hotel and travel expenses is quite a considerable sum for my wallet. Which is why I’m still hesitant.
Who else will be going? (Apart from Jan, Eivind and Nils Petter?

I hope for Christof Giese, Henning, and a friend of mine from Northern California… when at the beginning of the PUNKT history, the Chiaroscuro trio played at Agden, i bought it for the Deutschlandfunk (see comment 1)), and what a noy to present it at 9.05 p.m. to the listeners. It will be thrillmg to experience how circles will be closing and / or be opening again when this new encounter of old friends will take place. Thy all bring with them their Chiaroscuro memories: that long Norwegian journey, Erik’s post production and so on. But no one just wants to replicate…
