„I’ve been collecting vinyl again over the last few years. Spending too much money!!! But there are so many gorgeous pressings of jazz albums being released. I can’t resist them. The albums I buy I tend to play over and over again on my inherited 1970s hi-fi. It’s like a fine dining experience. I like to really listen to music, to really savour it and digest it, I like to make it an almost ceremonial banquet-like experience!“ (from „The Forests Of Your Mind“ – an interview with Paul Newland (Celvelode) on his new album „Muntjac“ – see TALK column)

Very early in life, Paul, two Mingus albums bewitched me: one was a live recording with „Fables of Faubus“, the other one „MingusMingusMingus“ from Impulse.
But it took decades and an excellent vinyl remaster, to finally dive into „The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady“ some years agou. As Mark Smotroff wrote about it:
„It is very much a large band recording so if you are not familiar with this album expect to hear horns-a-wailing, bass-a-thumpin’, piano tinkling ‘n twinkling and drums swinging and grooving. Mingus’ own liner notes to the album at one point portray the feeling here as “tears of sound” which is a very appropriate description.“
